Internships

The Center of Concern has worked with many graduate and undergraduate interns throughout our 39 years. Their research work, positive attitudes, and resourcefulness have increased the outreach of the Center in many ways. We owe them much for their contribution to our work and to our life at the Center.

Each year between 10 and 15 Interns and Visiting Researchers spend from six weeks to six months with us giving invaluable service in research for our web site, for our publications, and for our conferences. They enjoy contributing to our social and economic justice research work, attending conferences, networking with our colleagues, and participating in the life of the Center.

Center of Concern internships are un-paid. However, local transportation costs and lunch are provided by the Center of Concern.

Non-Profit Administration

Seeking: Undergrad or Graduate student in Non-Proift Administration, Business Administration, or Organizational Development

Goal: Provide support to the Center's Administrative Team

Description of the Work:

  • Sort and distribute incoming mail and process outgoing mail
  • Schedule conference room and calendars as requested
  • Word processing and document preparation
  • Help coordinate meetings and support other event arrangements including room scheduling, travel logistics, material preparation, calendar coordination, and phone follow-up
  • Help maintain donor database
  • Process monthly donations (including credit card processing and electronic bank deposits)
  • Help prepare income reports and thank you letters.
  • Enter invoice data in accounting system and cut checks.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently and pay close attention to detail. 
  • Solid problem-solving skills.
  • Dedication to working behind the scenes to help the organization function optimally.
  • General familiarity with office machinery such as photocopiers, fax machines, and postage meters. 
  • Some experience with data entry preferred.

Hours and time: Either Mornings: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or Afternoons: 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
Start date: As soon as possible.
Length of Commitment: Depends upon availability. Prefer semester or longer.

Human Rights in Development Project/Rethinking Bretton Woods

Seeking: Undergraduate or Graduate student in International Development, International Economic Policy, International Law or related subjects

Goal: Provide support to the Rethinking Bretton Woods and Human Rights in Development Project

Description of the Work:

  • Research through written and oral communication information needed for preparation of educational materials, research papers, listserv and website postings, press submissions and other resources.
  • Provide administrative assistance in organization of meetings and events.
  • Attend and report on panel presentations, policy briefings and other meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Fluent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently on a project basis.
  • Some familiarity with international development issues desired.
  • Commitment to work issues on international economic justice.
  • Attraction to challenges

Note: Each case will be evaluated on its own merits.
Hours and time: negotiable depending on intern's schedule.
Start date: on-going

Education for Justice Project

Seeking: Undergrad and Graduate students in International studies, Religious studies, Education or related areas.
Goal: Contribute to the Education for Justice Web Site and other materials needed for conferences and publications.
Description of the Work:

  • Research and evaluate educational material on global justice issues (poverty, hunger, human rights, women's rights, people-centered development, trade) through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching.
  • Help develop and write fact sheets and educational materials on global justice issues.
  • Assist with communications by email, phone, letter.
  • Assist with Education for Justice web site development.
  • Provide general support as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Senior or graduate student, or university graduate.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Some background in justice issues.
  • Flexible and dependable.
  • Educational experience and/or web site skills a plus but not necessary.

Hours and time: negotiable depending on intern's schedule.
Start date: on-going
Length of Commitment: Depends upon availability. Prefer semester or longer.

Development Department

Seeking: Undergrad or Graduate students in Business, Marketing, Education, or Liberal Arts.
Goal: To assist the Director of Development with researching grant opportunities, drafting fundraising appeals, communicating with donors, and doing outreach of the Center.

Description of the Work:

  • Help analyze and track donor patterns.
  • Help maintain donor files and records.
  • Research grant prospects and identify funding opportunities.
  • Assist with mailings and donor acknowledgements.
  • Assist in the strategic planning for the Development Department

Qualifications:

  • Junior, Senior or Graduate student, or university graduate.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Some background in development is helpful.
  • Some database experience is helpful.
  • Flexible and dependable.

Hours and time: negotiable depending on intern's schedule.

Global Women's Project

Seeking: Undergrad and Graduate students in International Trade and Commercial Policy, Development Economics, International Political Economy, International Law or related subjects.
Goal: Provide support to the Gender, Trade and Development program.
Description of the Work:

  • Research through written and oral communication information needed for preparation of educational materials, research papers, listserv and website postings, press submissions and other resources.
  • Provide administrative assistance in organization of meetings and events.
  • Attend and report on panel presentations, policy briefings and other meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Fluent verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently on a project basis.
  • Familiarity with international development issues desired.
  • Interest and experience in gender equity issues related to trade policies and international development.

Hours of work: Dependent upon class schedule.
Start date: Continuous
Length of Commitment: Depends upon availability. Prefer semester or longer.

Communications: Using New Media and Website Development

Seeking: Undergraduate or graduate student in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, or Wesite Design with an interest in media/public relations and working with new media: Web 2.0, Facebook, Twitter. Candidates who possess electronic communications experience and interest in web site development will be sought after.

Goal: To enhance the media strategy of the Center of Concern and assist with improvements of CoC websites.

Description of the Work:

  • Review and update the current list of media contacts via online and offline research.
  • Establish contacts relationships.
  • Network with other media staff in colleague organizations
  • Prepare a Press Packet.
  • Prepare and implement a promotional strategy incorporating our web site.
  • Develop a radio/TV media strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Senior or graduate student, or university graduate.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • An interest in justice issues.
  • Flexible and dependable.

Hours of work: Negotiable and dependent upon the individual's schedule.
